THIRUNELLI MAHA VISHNU TEMPLE
(962–1019 CE)

An ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Maha Vishnu, the Thirunelli temple is surrounded by the mesmerizing Brahmagiri hills and forests.

Follow the path uphill behind the temple to Papanasini River, meaning the stream that washes away all sins. Hindus believe that taking a dip in the Papanashini River may wash away all your sins. Besides, many devotees perform ancestral rites and last rites on the banks of Papanashini River.

Non-Hindus cannot enter the temple but it’s worth visiting for the otherworldly cocktail of ancient and intricate pillars backed by mountain views.

PAKSHIPATHALAM

Located deep forest in the Brahmagiri hills at an altitude of more than 1700 mtrs, Pakshipathalam is a formation of large boulders, some as tall as two story buildings.

The deep caves found here are home to a wide variety of birds, animals and distinctive species of plants.

The journey involves an arduous 7 km.

Trek through thick forest commencing at Thirunelli.

(Special permission required from DFO- North Wayanad at Mananthavady).

EDAKKAL CAVES (6000BC)

The caves were discovered by Fred Fawcett, the then Superintendent of Police of the Malabar district in 1890, during his hunting trip to Wayanad. He discovered the Edakkal rock-shelter, situated on the western side of Edakkalmala.

To his surprise, he identified the place as a habitat of Neolithic people.

These carvings (Carvings of human, animal figures and objects) give great evidence for a highly civilized society who lived in the pre-historic age.

Edakkal caves have drawn great attention of archaeologists and historians worldwide.

BANASURA SAGAR DAM

Banasura Sagar dam across a tributary of River Kabini is considered to be the largest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asia.

The dam attraction is ideally placed in the foothills of Banasura hills, which got its name from ‘Banasura’, the son of King Mahabali, the famous ruler of Kerala.

At Banasura Sagar dam, you can engage yourself in trekking and boating.

You can plan a trek to the dark forests of Banasura Peak.

A boating trip in the lake and the dam is also a unique experience for the travelers.

CHAIN TREE
(HAUNTED THAMARASSERY GHAT PASS)

Chained tree in Lakkidi which is among the highest points in Wayanad, stands this tree bounded by a chain.

TWhen British people ruled India, the route to Wayanad was known to a few local tribes, to gain access to this beautiful treasure trove and find the shortest route, one British engineer took help of a local tribesman, who was name was Karinthandan.

Once the engineer found his way, he killed the innocent man so that he could take the credit of finding the route.

Even today, a chain still hangs from a Banyan tree to mark the spot where a British Colonialist murdered an Adivasi tribesman

CHEMBRA PEAK

Chembra Peak located towards the southern part of Wayanad is the tallest summit in the region(2100 meter) Climbing this peak is a challenging mountaineering endeavor and would take a full day.

The surrounding areas offer exceptional photographic opportunities.

WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES

Wayanad abounds in wildlife sanctuaries.

Elephants, spotted deer, sloth bear, samba and gaur are just some of the species you can spot. The distances of the various sanctuaries from the resort are as follows:

Muthanga – 66kms, Nagarhole – 30kms, Bandipur – 72kms, Muthumala – 130kms, Tholpetti – 14kms.

SOOCHIPARA FALLS

It is a thundering three-tiered waterfall.

These falls capture nature at her best.

This place is also famous for rock climbing. It is surrounded by deciduous, evergreen and montane forests.

Locally referred to as Soochipara (“Soochi” meaning “Needle” and “Para” meaning “Rock”)
